The Setai By Aaron Glickman
I knew that Friday and Saturday would be crazy and didn't want to burn myself out, so on Thursday I decided to lay low and attend a simple cocktail reception in the library at The Setai featuring the works of Andy Warhol. The reception was thrown by Sofia Joelsson and Eloy Carmenate.
I knew several of the guests. Marcelo Rivero from the Professional Black Book and Star Services Miami helped to organize the event. I chatted briefly with Ike Starkman, owner of Jerry's Famous Deli, Rascal House and Epicure. South Beach's very own Tom Morgan was also present. Tom, of course, owns one of the best estates on Star Island and often uses it to entertain. He also works extensively with the Boys and Girls Club and is one hell of a good musician. There were many others that I didn't know, some interested in the art, most interested in socializing.
Most of the works came from the Andy Warhol Estate and were represented by Bird Fine Art in West Hollywood, CA. A mixture of original pieces and serigraphs were on display. Several of the originals that I liked came from Warhol's Cowboys and Indians collection. Buffalo Nickel, Indian Head Nickel and Kachina Doll were simple paintings featuring authentic details. Another piece that I enjoyed was a straightforward drawing of a female figure done with ink on tan paper.
Bird Fine Art also had a contemporary artist on display cut from the Warhol mold. Several of Russell Young's screen printed works were intermingled amongst Warhol serigraphs -- colorful mug shots of famous people, including Al Pacino, Frank Sinatra and Sid Vicious. Though it wasn't my cup of tea, if you're a fan of Warhol's screen prints, then you may enjoy Young's fresh Pop Art perspective.
