Santo Domingo Style By Jen Karetnick May 14, 2006
The all-inclusive vacation. Utter the phrase to a true traveler
and you'll probably get an authentic look of horror in return.
But every once in a while -- say you need a place to bring the
extended family for Grandma's 80th birthday -- and these prix
fixe, no-fuss getaways can be quite convenient. And the Dominican
Republic, which offers visitors little option but such resorts,
is an immensely reasonable destination these days for Miamians.
Indeed the DR is only a two-hour plane flight. Plus you can find
seaside lodgings to fit just about any budget, from mid-range at
Canoa Coral by Hilton in Bayahibe, where a three-night stay
includes plane fare, all meals and drinks (including national
alcoholic products) and non-motorized water sports for about
$700 per person, to the exclusive Casa de Campo in La Romana.
If doubling or tripling your costs isn't a problem, check out
Paradisus Palma Real
in Punta Cana, the popular tourist region.
This new spot includes a gorgeous spa and health club, golf
course, casino, and the largest free-form pool -- 37,600 square
feet -- on the island. Not to mention cooking classes, wine
tastings, British tea, horseback riding, kite surfing...
All-inclusive? Gotta say it: All right!
