Napa Novelties

When you head to Napa Valley, what to expect? The usual sun-drenched mornings? Afternoon tastings at typically picturesque wineries? Same-old dinners featuring local, seasonal ingredients?

Well, yes. But these are not so much clichés as they are truisms. Take such gourmet bed-and-breakfast lodgings as the Poetry Inn, where it’s as glam to score a room as it is to win an auction lot of cult cabernet. Or check into 1801 First for the spa-minded amenities in this charmingly modern inn, where the first meal of the day is three courses.

After sleep and sustenance, it’s wine time. For the trifecta of an aerial tram ride, a self-guided tour and a tutored tasting, head to Sterling Vineyards. Shoppers who enjoy products for the home as well as the palate will like the well-stuffed tasting rooms at Freemark Abbey and St. Supéry.

Finish off an afternoon at Domaine Chandon, where a flight of sparkling wines can morph into dinner at The Restaurant, the venue’s signature dining room. Or, just across the highway, chef-driven dining options, from Bistro Jeanty to Hurley’s Restaurant and Bar beckon.

No matter which way you approach it, Napa’s bound to satisfy.
