Design District By Aaron Glickman
Saturday night marked the final hoorah for ABMB 2006 and the Design District took center stage for the second time. Design Miami’s opening night was on Thursday bringing multitudes of people to the burgeoning area. This evening promised much the same.
I started at the Nexus Development sales center grand opening. Nexus is building four very unique urban projects in The District. Drinks were sponsored by Gala Rouge wine and Don Eduardo tequila. Design District Magazine was also there as was a fashionable DJ who spun a constant arrangement of upbeat rhythms. The vibe was cool.
By 10:00, I took to the streets. The scene was incredible, people everywhere, appetizers and drinks at all of the showrooms and galleries. There was also a special area where food and booze could be purchased. It was essentially an enormous neighborhood block party.
Fendi Casa’s expanded space was stylish. Holly Hunt was in town and her showroom served wine and a great assortment of cheese. We briefly chatted and she was very nice. Art Galleries like the Steve Martin Gallery, Etra Fine Art and others looked better than I had ever seen. Design Miami in the Moore Building was in full swing with Sky 90 Vodka as a sponsor. The exhibition was alive with an ultra hip crowd. Each floor featured design vignettes. I was a bit overwhelmed, and the crowd, not to mention a few drinks, made it difficult to fully appreciate the design on display. Although, I suppose if I had really intended to study the installations, I would have come when there were fewer people.
Back to the streets and the crowd was strong. Everyone was having a great time and after absorbing the atmosphere, I became convinced that the Design District is on the verge of something great!
