New Fashion on Collins By Francesca DuPont March 6, 2006
As every woman knows, sometimes there truly is nothing to wear in your closet, and—unless you're willing to schlep down to Village of Merrick Park—truly nowhere to shop. Beyond the tried-and-true standbys (En Avance and Chroma, on parking-devoid Lincoln Road) or Intermix and Barney's Co-Op, South Beach shoppers are largely relegated to the same predictable retail chains seen at any old mid-level malls. Thankfully, Collins Avenue has a new stylish kid on the block named LEO, elevating the strip between 6th and 9th streets to "you'll definitely find something here" shopping status.
Interior designer Benjamin Aloperi orchestrated the 2,500-square-foot space to showcase the clothing as fine art, framing the racks with stainless steel and illuminating the room with 550 undulating light bulbs, reminiscent of 1950s signs on the Las Vegas strip. Owners Christina Minasian (the former buyer for Los Angeles hot shop Kitson), her brother Armen and partners Henry and Mark Batievsky have stacked the racks of the men's and women's clothier with emerging, unexpected lines such as Stitch's, Vene Cava and Bill Wall. It's where to pick up jeans-friendly, embellished tops by Imitation of Christ, tattered denim jackets by Neil Barrett and the kind of colorful cocktail dresses by Heatherette that evoke a sought-after "where'd you get that!?" response. "People here aren't necessarily looking for outfits to wear to the office: Miami Beach is so much about looking good at night," explains Christina, who named the shop after her own astrological sign. "But it's not always about looking as sexy as you can. Leo's a place to find that great balance between sweet and feminine... and hot."
