HistoryMiami, one of the oldest and finest cultural institutions in Miami-Dade County, celebrated its first-ever gala event, "Moon Over Miami 70th Anniversary Gala" at the historic Surf Club. It was an evening of glamour and fun as guests at the sold-out event enjoyed the glitz and glamour of the 1940s. Reminiscent of the 1941 film, "Moon Over Miami, the Surf Club's ballroom was transformed by Grande Affaires/Deco Productions into the sizzling Starlight Jazz Lounge, engulfed in the nostalgic music of Jon Parker and his orchestra. During cocktails, guests were treated to synchronized swimming shows performed by the Dolphinettes of Miami from Aqua Firm & Fit, Inc.
"We promised that – just like HistoryMiami's programming – this elegant affair for the cultural arts would be of the highest quality and offer something for everyone," said Dr. Michael N. Rosenberg, Chairman of the Board of Trustees.
The evening's program, hosted by WPLG/Channel 10 news anchor Laurie Jennings, honored "Miami History Makers," recognizing those families and organizations that have had a significant impact in shaping South Florida. The honorees included The Reeves Family, The Valdes-Fauli Family, The Wolfson Family, the Florida Grand Opera, and the American Red Cross South Florida Region.
The Gala's raffle was a huge success and featured unique items and experiences, including two premium tickets to a Miami Heat game and NBA basketball autographed by Lebron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh; two (2) airplane tickets to the destination of your choice, courtesy of Continental Airlines, valued at $12,000; a private tour and dinner with historian Dr. Paul George at the Miami Circle, Florida's 41st National Historic Landmark; and a weekend stay at the 6 bedroom/4 bath home in Montana owned by historic preservationists, Dr. and Mrs. Sallye Jude.
The Moon Over Miami Gala raised funds for HistoryMiami's future expansion plans that seek to double museum exhibition and educational spaces and to renovate the Miami-Dade Cultural Plaza in Downtown Miami.
HistoryMiami's Gala was chaired by Deborah Campbell, Elizabeth Parnes, Barbara Reese and Leslie J. Lott, Esq., and the Gala Committee included Kerrin Bermont, Betty Brody, Tina Carlo, Karen Corlett McCammon, Kimberly Criser, Tiffany D'Aurizio, Sara Gutierrez, Debbie Hasty, Marilyn List, Natasha Lowell, Rita Michel, Eileen Plasky, Diane Rosenberg, Bonnie Schamback, Susannah Shubin, Libby Smith, Amy Sussman and Mary Young. The Grand Historian sponsors for the evening were AT&T, Diane and Michael Rosenberg and Dr. Sanford Ziff.
