A dedicated crowd of more than 100 people gathered to support the mission and preservation of the Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach, a Committee of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, at the third annual Zachor Society reception, which took place at the New World Symphony in Miami on Tuesday, April 1.

Hosted and chaired this year by Sari and Arthur Agatston, the event featured remarks by Norman Braman, Founding Chairman of the Memorial, and a special performance by the New World Symphony Fellows. The quartet performed the music of talented artists who composed their work during the Holocaust. Some of the compositions played were the singular musical piece that survived.

Another highlight of the evening was when Young Lion Maia Gold addressed the crowd about her unique relationship with Holocaust Survivor David Schaecter, a founder of the Memorial, and her commitment to being a part of the legacy of the Holocaust for the Survivors. As a Young Lion, Maia is part of a unique B’nai Mitzvah program at the Memorial for students 12 years of age. Students, like Maia, are paired with Holocaust Survivors, many of whom never had the opportunity to celebrate their own Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Students and their families spend significant time with the Survivor, attend workshops at the Memorial and commit to 10 hours of community service. Maia will celebrate her Bat Mitzvah in November 2015.

The Zachor Society helps to keep the memory of the Holocaust alive through its support of the Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach. The society – whose name means “remember” – recognizes donors whose contributions help maintain this crucial landmark in our community. With a gift of $5,000 or more annually, Zachor Society members help preserve the actual structure of the Memorial and ensure the mission of educating present and future generations about the Holocaust.

Donations enable the Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach to welcome more than 100,000 visitors annually, including visits by 30,000 schoolchildren who participate in educational programs about the Holocaust. The Memorial opens its doors to teachers, college students and professors as well. There is no charge to visit the Holocaust Memorial or attend its programs.

Andrew C. Hall, Esq. is the Chair of the Holocaust Memorial and Rabbi Solomon Schiff is the Immediate Past Chair. Brian L. Bilzin is the Board Chair of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation and Barbara Black Goldfarb is the Immediate Past Board Chair.
