Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez rolled up his sleeves for a down-home, fun-filled community event that celebrated the unique cultures and traditions of our community. The Mayor’s Bar-B-Que Backyard Ball raised nearly $250,000 to help improve lives in Miami-Dade through United Way.

More than 500 business and community leaders attended the event. Guests gathered at Metrozoo’s new Amazon & Beyond exhibit for an evening of music, friendship and bar-b-que classics from around the world, which included lechon, parrillada, jerk, tacos, sliders and other tasty treats.

The Mayor’s Ball began 12 years ago as way for the Mayor’s Office to promote the importance of philanthropic giving. United Way of Miami-Dade was selected as the beneficiary given its broad reach across the county and its residents.

Top sponsors included Fairholme at the $50,000 level; American Airlines and MCM Corporation at the $25,000 level; and AvMed and Florida Marlins at the $15,000 level. BVK Meka, Florida Power & Light Company, Greenberg Traurig, Maloof Companies, The Miami Herald/el Nuevo Herald, Micosukee Resort & Gaming, Morrison Brown Argiz & Farra, Publix Supermarkets, Waste Services of Florida were $10,000 sponsors. Aetna, Akerman Senterfitt, AT&T, Bilzin Sumberg Baena Price & Axelrod LLP, Carlton Fields, Holland & Knight, International Longshormen’s Association 1922, International Management Consultants, Meredith Corporation, Miami Seaquarium, Miguel De Grandy P.A., Ryder Charitable Foundation, Seaboard Marine Ltd., Squire Sanders & Dempsey LLP were $5,000 sponsors. Advanced Transportation Solutions, BDO Seidman, Florida International University, HNTB Corporation, Hogan & Hartson LLP, Miami Dade Fire Fighters IAFF Local 1403, Teamsters Local Union 769, Veolia Environmental Services, Zuni Transportation were $2,500 sponsors.

United Way is working to advance the common good by creating opportunities for a better life for all. We are focused on improving education, income and health – the building blocks for a good life. Our goal is to create long-lasting changes that prevent problems from happening in the first place. We invest in quality programs, advocate for better policies, engage people in the community and generate resources.
