WPBT2 hosted a preview screening of the new PBS series Makers: Women Who Make America on Tuesday, September 23 to a full house at the Grove Isle Hotel and Spa in Miami. Makers is a six- part series profiling the impact women have made over the past 50 years in the industries of comedy, politics, space, war, business and Hollywood.

Overlooking Biscayne Bay guests enjoyed hors d'oeuvres and networked with some of South Florida's ‘makers’ before the preview. WPBT2's President and CEO Dolores Sukhdeo welcomed the audience, “Public Television stands for lifelong learning. With documentaries like these we inspire the next generation, and even remind ourselves, of the long way that we have come.”

Lori Silvers, chair of WPBT2's Board of Directors, honored the South Florida Makers, women who make a difference in our community including: Michelle Bernstein, Margaret Callahan, Mayda Cisneros, Helen Aguirre Ferré, Fanny Hanono, Susan R. Hantman, Stella Holmes, Phillis Oeters, Roberta Ruggiero, Laurie Silvers, Young Song, and Jennifer Valoppi.

Nancy Armstrong, producer and founding member of Makers, introduced the “Women in Comedy” episode. "Because of women like the ones we spotlight on makers.com, young girls are growing up with a crystal clear expectation that they can do whatever they want with their lives – with no second thought– And that’s because girls growing up today can now look at virtually any sector and see a female role model – a leader. And that’s vitally important for them – because if they can see them, they can be them."

The guests also heard from Heidi Ewing, producer and director of the “Women in Comedy” episode, who answered audience questions.

The Makers series is broadcast Tuesdays at 9:00 pm until November 4 on WPBT2.
