MDC Miami Culinary Institute Students Shine!
Students from the Miami Culinary Institute (MCI) at Miami Dade College (MDC) once again showed off their skills and professionalism at this year’s Coconut Grove Arts Festival. During the 3-day festival MCI students assisted with cooking demonstrations in the Culinary Pavilion, alongside some of South Florida's best chefs. Art Basel VIP Brunch at Fairchild
Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Coral Gables, dedicated to exploring, explaining and conserving the world of tropical plants, recently hosted their annual Art Basel VIP Brunch in conjunction with its Art Basel sanctioned exhibit of Hugo França’s (pronounced [fɾánsa]) sustainable design pieces. The brunch was hosted by Fairchild Garden President Bruce Greer and Trustee Lin Lougheed, and approximately 250 people attended, including França. Originally from Brazil, França uses all natural materials to create interactive, functional and sustainable pieces, often tables and seating. Each piece uses reclaimed wood from felled, burned or dead trees found in Brazil. The exhibit continues through May 31, 2014 and entry is included in the price of regular admission.

ARCHITECTS DINNER CELEBRATING ‘TO BE BUILT MIAMI’
The Wolfsonian-FIU Museum, Pedro and David Martin of Terra Group hosted an architect’s dinner with Micky Wolfson, founder, and Cathy Leff, director, of the Wolfsonian-FIU. The event honored the individuals who are reshaping Miami’s future skyline. Guests mingled with the hosts, over 15 world-famous architects and many other members of the design world and VIPs during a cocktail hour in the Wolfsonian’s Dynamo Café. Art Heart Exhibition at Miami Children's Museum
When artists come together they make beautiful things happen. The nonprofit Art Heart will have its second annual exhibition Every Child’s Heart is Made for Joy. The exhibition will consist of mixed media works created by artists Shirley Bloomfield, Rosaria Pugliese and Natalia Reparaz with the interaction of child patients at children’s hospitals. The exhibition will be displayed at Miami Children’s Museum in the Kidscape Village entrance. Local artist, Cristina Figueredo Zizold, founded Art Heart as a means to provide a creative outlet for children.

Famed Spanish photographer Cristina García Rodero attended the VIP preview of her acclaimed photo exhibition Rituales en Haiti at Miami Dade College’s Museum of Art + Design (MOAD). The exhibition opened recently and is free and open to the public. A public lecture by the decorated photographer took place at the Centro Cultural Español. Photo caption (L-R). NEW GO RED FOR WOMEN CHAIR ANNOUNCED
Natalie Baro (pictured), President and CEO of Michelsen Advertising, is the newly appointed chair for the American Heart Association’s 2014 Go Red For Women campaign serving Miami-Dade and Broward, a campaign to raise awareness about heart disease, the No. 1 killer of women. Natalie will be leading the fundraising efforts by securing corporate and patron support. She will work closely with the GRFW Executive Leadership Cabinet as well as the American Heart Association staff partners to achieve success. This year, the American Heart Association and volunteer leadership has a record breaking fundraising goal. We would like to make the community aware of all the latest forms of prevention with an emphasis on CPR by bringing them to every home and workplace in our counties and educating on the use of defibrillators. By sharing this lifesaving tool, we aim to increase its awareness and hopefully create positive outcomes from negative situations, said Natalie.

Jean Colker Donates $500,000 to Center
In honor of Veterans Day, United Way of Broward County unveiled the new Jean & David Colker Center during a ceremony on its grounds in Fort Lauderdale. Ninety-one year old philanthropist Jean Colker donated $500,000 towards the renovation of the Center which will serve as a centralized location where veterans and military service members can go to receive case management services provided by MISSION UNITED. Sabadell hosts Inaugural Derby Tournament
Pinewood Derby Tournament hosted by Sabadell United Bank. Sabadell United Bank hosted the Inaugural Pinewood Derby Tournament to benefit the South Florida Council of the Boy Scouts of America. NASCAR’s Scott Lagasse Jr. attended the event with his race car to help raise funds for the organization. The tournament champion won two tickets and pit passes to NASCAR’s Homestead Race.

Walks Raise Over $580,000
More than 7,000 South Florida residents from Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Treasure Coast joined the Alzheimer’s Association’s Walks to End Alzheimer’s and united in a movement to reclaim the future for millions. Participants raised more than $580,000 to fund Alzheimer's care, support and research programs.
