In honor of Veterans Day, United Way of Broward County unveiled the new Jean & David Colker Center during a ceremony on its grounds in Fort Lauderdale. Ninety-one year old philanthropist Jean Colker donated $500,000 towards the renovation of the Center which will serve as a centralized location where veterans and military service members can go to receive case management services provided by MISSION UNITED. Pinewood Derby Tournament hosted by Sabadell United Bank. Sabadell United Bank hosted the Inaugural Pinewood Derby Tournament to benefit the South Florida Council of the Boy Scouts of America. NASCAR’s Scott Lagasse Jr. attended the event with his race car to help raise funds for the organization. The tournament champion won two tickets and pit passes to NASCAR’s Homestead Race.
More than 7,000 South Florida residents from Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Treasure Coast joined the Alzheimer’s Association’s Walks to End Alzheimer’s and united in a movement to reclaim the future for millions. Participants raised more than $580,000 to fund Alzheimer's care, support and research programs. The Children's Trust presented Cheryl Little, Esq., Executive Director and Co-Founder of Americans for Immigrant Justice, with the David Lawrence Jr. Champion for Children Award for Lifetime Achievement and Dedication to Children. This award recognizes individuals and programs that have worked tirelessly on behalf of children and families and have achieved greatness with their efforts. The award was presented at a special luncheon. Ms. Little has been a tireless advocate for the rights of children during her nearly 30 year legal career. She initiated AI Justice's Children's Legal Program, which provides free legal services to detained children who have no parent or guardian and are fleeing poverty, abuse or violence. Southern comfort food and a sense of purpose were served at a luncheon co-hosted by Shannon Allen, wife of Miami Heat star Ray Allen, and Guardians of the Children Luncheon Chairman Yury Rossi for 30 friends, supporters and potential donors of Jackson Memorial Foundation’s Guardian Angels support group. The informal gathering at Whisk Gourmet Food and Catering, was a prelude to the 15th Annual Guardians of the Children Luncheon. Allen told guests that it is vital that the community supports Holtz Children’s Hospital at the UM/Jackson Memorial Medical Center. The Guardian Angels are raising funds for renovation of Holtz’s Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Unit, which is more than 40 years old. About 100 children are diagnosed with cancer at Holtz each year, and more than 1,000 are treated annually.

Zoo Miami’s newest baby giraffe will make its first appearance on exhibit with the rest of the herd! The baby was born on Wednesday, October 30th, to a 6 year old female named, “Mia.” Though this is Mia’s 3rd baby, it is the 46th giraffe born in the history of Zoo Miami. Mia arrived at Zoo Miami from the Dickerson Park Zoo in Missouri in October of 2007. The father’s name is “Fezzik,” a 16 year old male that was born at the St. Louis Zoo and arrived at Zoo Miami in May of 1998. The newborn weighed 152 pounds, stood close to 6 feet tall and was determined to be a male during its neonatal exam last Wednesday. It is yet to be named.
His House Children’s Home (HHCH), held their 10th Annual Charity Imagine Gala and was the on most successful gala yet to help abused children in need of a family and home. Hosted by NBC 6’s investigative reporter, Myriam Masihy, over 500 guests gathered to make a difference in the lives of South Florida’s at-risk children. The audience was greatly moved when the children of His House performed Legacy and walked into the crowd to personally thank guests for attending with high-fives and hugs. Special guest Anthony Bunn (pictured), a former foster child, shared his story about when he lived at His House and how they found him a big family in New York. His House surprised him with a cake to celebrate his 10th year of adoption. Mark Rufeh, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Citigroup, ended the night with inspirational words that motivated guests to get involved through volunteering, adopting, fostering, mentoring or donating. The event was a great success thanks to their volunteers and supporters, which include Azamara Club Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, and Comcast.
Panache, A Classic Party Rentals Company, is leading Set an Extra Place at the Table program to benefit both Share Our Strength and Feeding South Florida. Panache hosted more than 180 guests representing 50 plus South Florida companies at the first-ever Set an Extra Place at the Table event at its Pompano Beach facility. Spearheaded by Panache co-founder Kelly Murphy, the charitable evening was the launch of a new anti-hunger campaign designed to help raise awareness of the prevalence and severity of hunger in the United States.
The Learning Experience® (TLE®), the country’s fastest growing early learning academy franchise for children six weeks to six years old, today announced that it has been recognized by Make-A-Wish® Southern Florida as its Corporation of the Year. TLE® recently implemented the first nationwide curriculum to teach philanthropy to preschoolers, developed with the assistance of Make-A-Wish® Southern Florida. Through this philanthropy curriculum, TLE® introduces and instills in children the value of selflessness and giving at an early age, with the hope that those values stay with them throughout their development from child to adulthood. Over the past year, the company's commitment to the importance of giving has resulted in more than half of a million dollars raised for Make-A-Wish®.
FedEx Miami selected Safespace North in Miami, a nonprofit organization established to assist domestic violence victims and their children, as the recipient of their annual FedEx Cares Day. More than 100 local FedEx employees volunteered to enhance and beautify Safespace North so that survivors of domestic violence staying at the shelter could enjoy a nicer environment as they work to get back on their feet. In the US alone, four people die each day as a result of domestic violence. The event was held at Safespace North. In addition to volunteering, FedEx made a $12,000 donation to Safespace North.
