Since 1946, MCCJ has recognized leaders in the business, religious and corporate community by awarding them with the coveted Silver Medallion. It’s become a highlight of the season, providing the opportunity to come together and celebrate Miami’s diversity, in appreciation of those who have helped to build a more welcoming, inclusive, just and cooperative society. WPLG Local 10 anchor, Calvin Hughes, hosted this year’s awards, along with chairs George Feldenkreis and Marita Srebnick and honorary chairs Thelma Gibson, Dorothy & Aaron Podhurst and Jackie & Robert Traurig. The event took place at The Four Seasons and celebrated the humanitarian efforts of five deserving South Florida leaders under the theme of Many Faces of Miami. Receiving the prestigious Silver Medallion were Dr. Nelson Adams, Dr. Barth Green, Penny Shaffer and the late Martin Fine who received the award posthumously. The Clergy Award went to Archbishop Thomas Wenski. Guests enjoyed a touching performance by the Miami Children's Theatre. Rabbi Solomon Schiff gave the invocation and a Unity Candle Ceremony was held by various clergy of all denominations to conclude the main portion of the evening. Over 25 past recipients also attended the gala, including David Lawrence, Jr., Tony Argiz, Alberto Carvalho, Richard Fain, Larry & Deborah Hoffman, George Knox, Sheldon Anderson and Reverend Dr. Patrick O’Neill.
