Blossom Camp

June 13 – August 5
Virginia Woolf once wrote that every woman should have a room of her own. We believe that young women should have one, too. Well, maybe not completely on her own, but a sanctuary where she can blossom among friends without the pressure of school and the distractions of technology. At Blossom Camp, we encourage campers to disconnect to reconnect. Co-founder Chris Scarano wanted something different for his 9 year-old daughter. He reached out to co-founder Maria de los Angeles who spoke to women friends in their 40s about what they would’ve wanted in their formative years. The answer was what any woman — from girlhood to womanhood — would want at any point of her life: a refuge, a relaxed environment to develop a positive relationship to herself. She’d want a space where she can trust her inner wisdom, grow and learn in a way that doesn’t feel like school. “Live happy with your heart” means learning to be mindful and content with yourself in a space of love and respect. This helps all of us, young and old, to form healthy relationships with others. Empowerment comes from self-acceptance of inner beauty, so we value pride over vanity. Creative forms of expression, in which the mind can wander peacefully, foster a whole sense of self. Multi-tasking is avoided and value the focus instead. Less is really more: being present and in the moment, when painting, journaling, dancing — even eating. Lunch hour is never rushed. Play time is important to free the mind from the constraint of should have done and create space for want to and can do. At Blossom Camp, campers are encouraged to explore their sense of self and the world through imagination, creativity and organic discipline. Our leaders will encourage campers to co-create experiences so there is freedom within the camp’s structure. Happiness is the curriculum.
