One Block at a Time
Connecting our cultures constructs a better world
When you imagine making history, you probably don’t think about Mega Bloks. But that’s exactly what the Miami-based non-profit Connecting Our Cultures has set out to do – to link our collective cultures with those popular brightly-colored bricks in order to create a symbol of worldwide unity, peace, and connection.
“There is something so simple about playing and building together for a wonderful cause,” says Connecting Our Cultures co-founder Gladys Mezrahi.
So Mezrahi, along with project co-founder Stacey Schrager, created ConnectingOurCultures.org.
“The whole idea that we want children to learn is that if they dream it, they can build it… but they can’t build it alone,” says Schrager.
From their original desire to gather the culturally diverse children and families in their community to work on a single larger-than-life unity project, their vision soon expanded to involve worldwide organizations and other non-profits. And with that vision rapidly becoming a reality, Connecting Our Cultures is not only an inspiring lesson for children about cultural connections and unity or even setting a Guinness World Record; it’s also an incredible turnkey fundraising tool to assist other 501c(3) non-profit charities in their fundraising efforts.
Connecting Our Cultures is now building the world’s largest Sukkah – a hut or booth celebrated in by many cultures during the Festival of the Harvest, where friends, family and strangers gather together, to bless the harvest – and it will be constructed solely out of MEGA BLOKS.
At $3 a block, kids and their families around the world can participate in this historic unity project, and designate $2 for the participating non-profit organization of their choice. The remaining $1 is being reinvested in cultural diversity education programs in our local community.
The Dezer Sukkah, will measure 30 feet long, 18 feet wide, and 15 feet high and will be adjudicated by Guinness World Records to set the global record. Non-profit partners and the community will be invited to the building celebration with the finished structure to be housed at the Dezer Collection, an art and auto museum located in North Miami, who also developed Trump International Beach Resort in Sunny Isles Beach. Now that’s building history—literally—block by block.
