Video Exclusive: Julian Schnabel Master Workshop

Renowned artist visits NSU Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale

Bringing together the work of French artist Francis Picabia (1879–1953), American artist Julian Schnabel (b. 1951), and Danish artist Jens Ferdinand Willumsen (1863–1958) for the first time in the United States, the exhibition Café Dolly: Picabia, Schnabel, Willumsen will be on view at NSU Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale from October 12, 2014 – February 1, 2015. The illuminating exhibition reveals surprising connections between stylistic and painterly concerns that span generations and geography.

Schnabel was in town to hang the exhibition, which includes several of his works that have never been displayed. While in Fort Lauderdale, he led a pre-opening tour of the exhibition, offering wonderful insight into his process, and also the processes of Picabia and Willumsen. Each of the artists shares wonderful similarities, and Schnabel enlightened a group of artists about these similarities with the passion and conviction for which he is known.

SocialMiami’s Aaron Glickman received rare access to the tour and to Schnabel, and created this documentary short of the experience.
