William Tuck to Follow Gallery’s Art Basel Opening
The opening of Galerie Bertin-Toublanc during Art Basel Miami Beach was no coincidence, as the charismatic owner chose the art-infused week to host a private soiree that officially opened her 17,000 square-foot sanctuary of contemporary art in Miami’s Wynwood Art District.
A world-class selection of pieces by Baba Anand (India), Liu Bolin (China), Supakitch (France), Philippe Chevallier (France), and Mauro Perucchetti (UK) were showcased to a crowd that included collectors, philanthropists, and art enthusiasts from around the globe. Hostesses Sheila Rosenberg, Juliette Salomon and Lucy Almodovar greeted guests that included Leanne Zaleski (Quintess), Oscar Melian (Wachovia) and Whitney Blount (PalmBeach3).
Now, a little more than a month after the opening, Galerie Bertin-Toublanc is featuring William Tuck: From Jupiter to Venus. This British painter is a graduate of the Wimbledon School of Art and Royal Academy of Arts. His technique includes the use airbrush and varnish to create a photographic effect on his paintings.
“The work I am doing at the moment is very loosely based around old master paintings and subjects, especially involving classical mythology,” explains Tuck. “I often base the composition on an existing painting and set up tableaux with cheap toys and other accessories, then photograph and paint it. I am drawn to using toys as I like the contrast between the often grandiose nature of the subject and the pathos of the small figures. The parallel between the fantasy worlds which both inhabit also interests me, bringing up ideas surrounding the roles of ‘high’ and ‘low’ culture in society.”
Owner Armelle Bertin-Toublanc opened La Galerie Bertin-Toublanc in October 2001 in the heart of the 8th Arrondissement of Paris. Nearly four years later, she re-opened the gallery in its current location on 35 Avenue Matignon, situated two steps from the Champs-Elysees and the Grand Palais. Armelle’s vision of the gallery shines through her choice of artists, and her primary objective is to continue enlarging its signature contemporary collection from all over the world.
