Service Fair Saves Kittens & Pups

Miami Dade County Animal Services organized its first Volunteer Fair, opening its doors to a community that embraced the opportunity to aid orphan dogs and cats. “It was a big success and a great victory for homeless pets in our community,” says Yolanda Berkowitz, Friends of Miami Animals Foundation president. Over 250 people – including marketing guru Jennifer Diliz, WSVN’s Louis Aguirre, and the Ransom Everglades School’s REscue Club — came to tour the Pet Adoption and Protection Center, which is a 70,000 square-foot, 5-acre animal shelter in Doral that includes outdoor exercise and play areas, a community room for cats and state-of-the-art medical facilities.
Thierry Isambert’s event catering treated everyone to vegetarian fare and FoMA provided prizes for a drawing. Nearly 120 of the guests signed up to volunteer, with many of those immediately fostering kittens. The following day, the shelter filed another 30 volunteer applications and 15 foster parent applications. “We could not have done it without our friends,” says Berkowitz, “and are grateful for your support and belief in the mission of FoMA to improve and save the lives of homeless pets through education, advocacy, financial support and increased awareness.”
