Barry University announced the opening of its new contemporary Andy Gato Gallery, located on the second floor of Thompson Hall. The 4,100 square-foot gallery is named in honor of Andy Gato of Farrey's Lighting. Gato first got involved with the university two years ago when he helped the Theology Department with a lighting project for an exhibition. He passed away unexpectedly shortly after helping out with that exhibit.

The Andy Gato Gallery is a state-of-the-art exhibition space and lecture hall, and part of the space, furnished by the Department of Student Affairs, will also serve as a student lounge area with around-the-clock access. Barry University donor Andy Gonzalez guaranteed all construction to renovate the space which previously served as a dining area. Farrey's Lighting and e-Tech donated equipment.

The premiere exhibition, on view through November 21, reflects the long history of Barry University's visual art programs by including the work of present and former faculty members as well as graduate and undergraduate alumni. The gallery's hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

The Department of Fine Arts will host its first lecture at the gallery on October 15 at noon. Barry University Professor of Fine Arts Dr. Dan Ewing will present an art history lecture.
